Solar panels are long-lasting under the right conditions, but they can still be prematurely decommissioned for a variety of reasons:- manufacturing defects in panels, retiring old technology panels for new ones to achieve higher energy production, or simply removal due to change of plans or repair to roofs or roof coverings.

Solar panels are collected and inspected. Those that are still functioning are cleaned, tested, graded, certified and packed for the reuse market, while damaged ones are recycled. Materials such as glass, aluminium, plastic, silicon, cables and connectors can be recovered from recycling.
